You don't need any fitness equipment.
Walk for 30 minutes every day, including weekends, Mondays, and Fridays. Do 60 minutes of additional, higher intensity cardio each week.
Cut back on the foods you eat with high fat and high sugar content. Eat only single servings (read the label) with less than 3 grams trans fat and 3 grams sugars. Throw out all of your ice cream, chips, cookies, cheese, fried foods, bacon, and candy.
Eat breakfast, and eat five small meals per day instead of three big meals. Don’t starve yourself during the day, but if you don't wake up famished, then you ate too much the day before. Stop eating at least two hours before you go to bed.
Get 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night. Turn off the TV and the computer. Sleep is vitally important.
Don't consume alcohol—alcohol is nothing more than empty calories with no nutritional value. Some people will argue that alcohol has some health benefits when consumed in moderation—I’m not debating that—but we’re talking about weight loss here. Lay off the booze if you want to lose the belly.
Drink lots of water, then drink more. Not tea, not Gatorade, not milk. Water.
Good luck.

Well, if it's weight loss you are looking to achieve, then you will probably need to go on some kind of a diet. The best formula for weight loss is diet and exercise. No matter what the diet is, the most important part is getting your heart rate up. You want to get it into you target heart rate zone (You can find what yours is by just typing the words "target heart rate" into google.). I find this easiest to do, and sustain, with some kind of cardio. Treadmills can be expensive and I have a hard time shelling out hard earned cash for something that I could just as easily do for free by just running outside. However, I understand some people are unable to do this. I am not certain, based on your question, whether you need to stay in your house when you exercise or you are just looking for something to do on your own, not at a gym or something like that. If you don't need to stay home I would say run outside, if the weather permits, although the pavement can be hard on the body so if you can help it find a nearby track at a school or a dirt path. If it is necessary to stay indoors for some reason, then I would recommend a stationary bike. They are less expensive than treadmills. However, the seat can be a little uncomfortable especially when you are riding it for 30 mins at a time. You might have to work a little longer, or harder, to get the same results as a treadmill, but I feel it is worth it. So to answer your question, finally, I would say treadmill is "best" at-home cardio machine but a stationary bike may be your best overall bet if money is an object. Don't go for the fancy machinery. Get something that will do the job. All the bells and whistles are unecessary for most people. Just a quick note, something like a total gym, a bowflex, or free weights aren't great primary options. When attempting to lose weight, one usually must have some kind of caloric deficit. We either eat more calories than our bodies burn and gain weight, in the form of fat or muscle, eat less and lose weight, or eat the same and maintain. Some form of cardio will burn calories more than weight training especially at the level that most people workout. Weight training can be a great complement to a weight lose regimen. It will burn calories and I believe it will increase the chance that you will lose fat instead of muscle. However, you asked for the one best machine, and I would say that would involve some type of machinery for cardio, treadmill or bike as mentioned above. Also, if you decide to implement a weight training program, you are best with just some light free weights. Bar bells are good and they allow you to do a number of different exercises with them. The weight training will keep your heart rate up and will be better than doing just cardio alone. Cardio is recommened 3 to 5 times a week and for 30 mins to an hour. Don't train the same muscles back to back days if you do weight train. If you are serious about weight loss, search google for important information. Cutting the number of calories you eat a day can help. The Atkins diet also seems to be very popular and supposedly leads to quick results. Drinking water, as your only beverage, is quite helpful as well. There are may tips out there. You can mix and match and try and do what works for you. Good Luck, and if this is something you truly want to do then you must be conscious of it 24/7. Don't fall for the temptation of temporary happiness that many find in food.

An elliptical trainer!! here is some info
An elliptical trainer (also cross trainer) is a stationary exercise machine used to simulate walking or running without causing excessive pressure to the joints, hence decreasing the risk of impact injuries.
Elliptical trainers offer a non-impact cardiovascular workout that can vary from light to high intensity based on the resistance preference. Most elliptical trainers work the user's upper and lower body (although some models do not have moving upper body components), although using an elliptical trainer is designed to elevate the heart rate more than building muscles.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.
I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.
It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.
Get started today!

Loosing weight is not a "fast" process. It requires lots of discipline and months of hard work. Do not starve yourself or exercise like a fiend; keep it steady and rhythmic.
A treadmill is good, however, running is not the best thing for human bodies and joints. The hill climber machines are great because they're low-impact. I'm not quite sure what they're called, but they have them at gyms.
Stationary bike-rider is another one too.
Best of luck!

I would say the treadmill is the best ... walking is supposedly the best form of exercise you can do without putting a lot of strain on your joints. I am having gastric bypass surgery and have to lose 50lbs before hand. Since January 27th I have lost 17lbs. What I do is I use a small plate instead of the regular dinner plate and I put what I want on it ... then after I have it on my plate I put half of it back ... yes I know this sounds crazy but it works for me :) I also have cut out white sugar and I limit myself to a half of an english muffin (multigrain or wheat) or a piece of toast, I do not eat any carbs aside from that. I do not drink any soda, instead I make iced tea with splenda, or drink crystal lite, or smart water. Its hard to just drink water unflavored all day! for me. Diets just do not work ... its really a lifestyle change you have to make. I wish you goodluck :)

Your own self control. There is no fast result to weight loss that is healthy and sustainable. If you want to lose weight, leave some food on your plate, eat foods that will turn into energy more efficiently, and eat less fatty foods. From a scientific standpoint, the less you eat, the less you have to burn off with activity. It's a simple matter of input and output.

You will need to cut your calorie intake, but walking is the very best exercise and it is low impact. Bike riding is also very good and if you have a roller rink or ice rink nearby, exercise become more pleasure than pain. Personally I have a treadmill, an ab-lounger, Jake's hip and thigh machine, skates and a bike. I still like walking the best. I even take my camera to take a few special shots along the way.

I have had recent success with Carmen Electra's striptease workout series available on DVD; modified eating such as 6 small meals a day--no red meats--mostly tuna chicken, salmon, Triscuits, cottage cheese, slim fast smoothies (add fruit) made with soy milk. BTW, I am 34, 5'1 and about 122. good luck!
