My friend has had to have both weak and strong antibiotics for a month now due to an abscess on her leg which has been removed. She spoke to a Polish colleague at work and he said in their country if you have strong antibiotics there is a risk of you becoming infertile. Is this true? If so why was she not informed by her GP or the hospital?

It is a common assertion that some antibiotics can interfere with the efficiency of birth control pills. Although there remain few known cases of complication, the majority of antibiotics do not interfere with contraception, despite widespread misinformation to the contrary..

Doctors advise that you use another form of contraception if taking antibiotics, they would not do that if they made you infertile, they are saying use another form to prevent pregnancy!!
That polish colleague needs to get true facts!

Every drug has risks. Who can measure her infertility if she has never been pregnant? There is a big risk of heart damage if an infection goes unchecked, that is why the strong antibiotics. Most of medicine is some kind of trade off. If any of us knew all the risks of medication we wouldn't take any of them. If we knew the truth about a lot of things we'd be afraid to leave the house.

I've never heard that before. The only thing I've heard concerning antibiotics and fertility is that they can decrease the effectiveness of the birth control pill.

I have never heard this and I am sure that, if it were true, the doctor would have to inform you of any danger.
