Do not drink diet sodas. Diet sodas have been called the "new crack" because they are so addicting. Diet sodas will actually make you gain weight as well as make you depressed. because of the artificial sweeteners used, such as aspartame, they are also giving you a variety of medical symptoms.
Eliminate aspartame and mono-sodium glutamate.
aspartame goes by NutraSweet. Both aspartame and MSG are classified as excitotoxins. there are two great books on this subject, aspartame is it safe? was written by a medical doctor. based on hundreds of case studies, the doctor concludes that aspartame is responsible for many distressing medical problems, ranging from headaches and memory loss to hyperactivity in children and seizure disorders. next the book excitotoxins, the taste that kills, also written by a medical dorctor, examines how mono-sodium glutamate, aspartame, and similar substances cause harm to the brain and nervous system, and how these substances can cause Alzheimer's, Lou Cherig's disease, depression, MS and more.

Personally I drink Diet Coke because I like the taste. I never gave it a second thought as to whether it would make me lose weight or not. It has less sugar, and therefore less carbs if you are doing a low carb diet I guess. But the sodium content is so high you would have to drink massive amounts of water to keep it down.
I don't think your mother in law got diabetes from Diet Coke alone. That's just not possible. True aspartamane isn't the best thing in the world for you, but diabetes is an inability to use the sugar your body produces from food you eat, and people get it whether they are dieters or not. Its more of a chemical deficiency. And its usually genetic.
I will say though that changing from regular Coke to Diet Coke can decrease your caloric intake and thus help you lose a little weight in that aspect, but one does not lose weight by drinking Diet Coke alone. I think when I switched I lost like 5 pounds in a month LOL.

Aspartame is, indeed, bad for you, but it's not as bad as you may think. In order for it to cause serious health problems, you would have to drink two or three liters of a drink containing aspartame every day to get serious health problems. But, like I said, aspartame IS bad for you and I definitely would recommend just having regular sugar. Besides, I don't know about you, but I would MUCH rather have regular sugar than fake sugar. It tastes so much better.

People drink Diet Coke and claim it's healthy because they have no self-discipline.

They say that altho it has no calories the fake sugar does not trick your body it still affects it the same way sugar does, resulting in people not realizing they are making their bodies process too much sugar. Too much of any soda can also cause your kidneys too shut down. Anyone is a fool to think that drinking "diet" soda will make them loose weight.

You're really better off not drinking any form of soda period. I went from drinking almost a case of Mt. Dew a day to not drinking soda and drinking water instead. Outside of the obvious healthy reasons, it just makes you feel better overall.

Don’t focus on your defects, spotlight your best bits. Little waist? Belt it in. Stunning bust? Lower the neckline. Toned butt? Rock tight jeans. Captivating legs? Show ‘em off. It’s really that easy.

For sandwich-lovers, use spinach or swiss chard leaves as opposed to a wrap, skip the piece of cheese, and load through to the veggies.

Eat in front of a person rather than a screen. It cuts down on mindless eating and makes you more accountable for each nip.
