If I eat a sandwich of peanut butter and drink a cup of cold milk before bedtime, I sleep much better. What ingredient is it that makes me rest better? I know warm milk will work, but I drink it cold.

Both peanuts and milk contain Tryptophan.

Tryptophan is a precursor of the sleep-inducing substances serotonin and melatonin. This means tryptophan is the raw material that the brain uses to build these relaxing neurotransmitters. Making more tryptophan available, either by eating foods that contain this substance or by seeing to it that more tryptophan gets to the brain, will help to make you sleepy. On the other hand, nutrients that make tryptophan less available can disturb sleep.

i am going to have a P & J and a pitcher of milk in the previous I hit the sack and that i nod off more beneficial advantageous than on an an empty abdomen. The L-tryptophan performs an major position in both healthy sleep and mood and is contained in both milk and peanut butter. I basically make certain I hit the health center the subsequent day, exceptionally if I double up on the peanut butter!

Believe it or not, both milk and peanut butter contain tryptophan, which is an amino acid that makes you tired. It's the same thing that's in turkey that can make you feel sleepy.

Warm milk works because not only are you ingesting the tryptophan, but it's also comforting, like back to infancy when your mom warmed up a bottle for you.

But warm or cold, you still ingest the tryptophan and get sleepy.

It isn't the ingredients that cause you to sleep it is the protein that keeps you satisfied during the night, it sticks with you and it is comfort food, we all sleep and feel better when we eat comfort food, just like a baby right? The milk is part of that too.
