Wow!

Obviously non-union if you're just beating the pizza guy, but what is an "inter-modal" employee's job description? I haven't heard of this before.

Could be the wages are commensurate with duties or length of service.

Railroads in general haven't been known as their employees' benefactor beyond paying what they are forced to do as a result of collective bargaining, so, the treatment of the "thralls" is in large part shared by all in the industry in the "dirty fingernails" end of the business.

So, smile on the tenth and twenty fifth of each month as you cash your check. Or, as suggested above, hire out as the pizza guy. If you get the pies to the customers hot, there's usually a tip in store. This may push your pizza earnings beyond your inter-modal earnings in relatively short order.

Most intermodal facilities are contracted.

To avoid union wages, alot of operations are outsourced.

The railroad puts out for bid the operation of an intermodal yard, and awards it to the lowest bidder.

Of course, the contractors do not hire people at "railroad rate" union wages.

I don't understand how the unions have let the railroads get away with so much outsourcing, except that the union management is more interested in taking care of the current union members.

Most agreements to allow outsourcing have the condition no current employees are laid off.

The employees of the contractors don't vote them into office.

I would note however, that although most non-trainservce employees complain of long hours, the trainservice employees can work much longer.

Also, the union does nothing to organize the contractors, that cost would cut into the union budget.

Thanx for advertising the web site, it looks interesting.

As Hoghead states, sometimes the railroad as an employer only does things because the collective agreement forces them to.

I work for CN, and although I enjoy the work I do, there's a lot of stuff I put up with that I'd rather not, but I accept it as part of the job. I work a lot of long hours, I'm away from home a lot, and I'm mentally and physically exhausted when I get home many days. Not to mention, I work a lot of goofy hours, I get called for work in the middle of the night way too often, and my work schedule is totally unpredictable.

Every railroad, big or small, has a different rapport with their employees, and in that, there's various opinions amongst the employees. But, based on my own experience and that of colleagues in the same business, the Class 1's can be pretty rough with the rank and file, some worse than others.

I guess CSX is just one of them.

Just remember that every railroad job is also a UNION job, so if you are not satisfied with your wages or working conditions complain to your union. They are the ones that negotiated the terms of the contract you are working under. CSX is only doing what they are allowed to do under the terms of that contract.

The next time you hear any Hispanic activist organization's stating that "illegal aliens" are only taking jobs that Americans don't want to do, think about what you said in your question about what a terrible job you have.

Clowns and mimes would be fun to make out with....especially if you had one of each. Rats are cute and could be kept busy with some cheese and a maze, so they would be awesome company. I'm also a licensed snake charmer (only a few accidents), so no worries there. I pick spiders because they have tiny, little brains and I have double-wide feet....and I made a vow in September of 2003 to hurt no living thing unless I was in a bad mood. Have I mentioned that being locked in a closet kind of makes me happy?

If you don't like it, leave!
There are plenty of people who would gladly take their bull crap for the amount of money they pay.

Why don't you go down to a local fast food restaurant? Oh yea, they only pay minimum wage....
