No contest here. The Atheist is sooner to suffer from depression.
Atheists have nobody to turn to in times of need. They believe this life is all there is. If life happens to be bad at the moment, tough. They have no reason to hope things will get better. Atheists are also more likely to spend a long time depressed.

EDIT: In response to above posts (no to argue or anything. just my two cents):
1) If Christians are wrong and there is no life after death, how could they possibly be depressed or even sad after they die? Only a dead Atheist could be such when they meet God.
2) Most well-adjusted, intelligent people I know are Christians (and I have met many people from all different backgrounds).

Atheist when their alive.
A Christian for hundreds, possibly thousands of years when they die.
That is why christian churches and old religious institutions are so haunted.

When alive, christians are so confident and proud of their ignorance.
But when they die, they know they have been deceived by the most evil organisation to ever exist.
See the Almanac of Evil for a list:

I would say out of the two, the Christian. Some Christians get so fixated on death it's scary. Atheists tend to be more focused on living, so they tend to be happier.

Case in point about Christians: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AstWfoZDzImEY1S_25SzlODsy6IX?qid=20070212233811AAARGjw&show=7#profile-info-7f4bb45c618da1a425d10114d0bd90edaa

religion is the opium of the masses. although, most atheists seem to be pretty well adjusted, intelligent people. i think when religious people start to doubt their beliefs, it can really throw them for a loop.

I have no idea. Are there studies and statistics that could clear up this matter for us?
