Definitely go with the gold or titanium. Way less chance of allergies and infection. Silver is okay, as long as it is not silver plated! Secondly, go to a tattoo/body piercing place to have it done. This is for this same reason your Grandma and Mom don't have problems. Because they used a needle. Places that use a piercing gun actually shatter the cartilage in your earlobe and cause damage to the nerves, and cause more problems with infections. Hope this helps!

The only ear piercing that you really have to worry about a specific material is the cartalidge. If you are just planning on piercing your earlobes, most places have a selection of surgical steel studs that are more reasonable in price then gold or even sterling silver. If you want to pierce your cartlige, then I would go with at least 14 carat gold, as the cartlidge is more sensative. Do keep in mind that once you do get your ears pierced you want to keep them clean. Turn the stud at least once a day and if they don't give you a cleaner for them, just some rubbing alcohol on a kleenex or a Q-tip works just fine. After you are able to change them (usually 6 weeks) if you do end up with an infected piercing, the quickest way to clear it up is 1) take the earring out 2) take a sewing needle threaded with white thread and dip the thread in some rubbing alcohol. Run the needle BACKWARDS through your ear (eye first). Leave the earring out and repete the cleaning process at least once a day for about 3 days and it should clear up. Take it from me. I have 4 in my lobes and 1 in the cartlidge.

Some people are allergic to gold and some to silver. f you have your ears pierced at a reputable salon, they'll know what kind of studs to put in -hyoallergenic ones. You will have to turn the studs every day, and keep them in, swabbing the area with rubbing alcohol. There's never any reason to get infections. After about 2 weeks, you can remove the studs and put in the ear-rings of your choice. Keep doing the turning routine about 5 minutes per day. When you take them out, wipe your ear lobes back and front with rubbing alcohol, and also the ear-rings -where they go in. Most people get infections because they ignore this basic hygiene, or because they leave the ear-rings out so long the holes close over, they force the ear-rings in anyway, and it never really works.
Enjoy!
P.S. Your grandmother's generation were lucky - but I bet you they used sterilized needles and swabbed with alcohol. Anyway, don't risk their method:-)

As long as you keep your studs clean with peroxide soaked cotton two times daily and turn your earring studs two times daily, you should be fine. If any white drainage comes out a few days after or you have too much redness or swelling then you know there is trouble. That usually happens if you don't keep your earlobes clean and are not turning the earring. It should be fine. Every other person has their ears pierced. Good luck and just think of all those beautiful earrings you'll be able to wear soon. Earrings are really really pretty!!

Maybe the folks from your grandma's day were onto somrthing. I myself am 56 & pierced both of my ears with 2 holes each as a teen. I used the sewing needle, thread method with a potato behind the ear for leverage. I tied the thread off & swabbed it good with alcohol several times a day & then pulled the thread round & round to keep the inside of the hole clean. I did this until the holes were healed & then put in earrings. I've never had an infection to this day. Are you brave enough? It really didn't hurt.

Unless you have allergies the metal makes no difference. The metal will not cause an infection. Some kind of bacteria has to get in your new piercing to cause an infection.
Best tips keep your hair clean, your hands clean, your ears clean and don't fiddle with them while they are healing.
I wouldn't assume that in the older generations they had no problems they were just tougher and dealt with it instead of having to be diagnosed as having an infection. And I think we are more vulnerable to bacterias now that there has been so much antibiotic use.

I had surgical steel studs and I have had not had any problems. , Just keep the earings clean, throw them in some boiling water for a few minutes every week. I don't wear my earings at night anymore, I found it made them sore. But don't take your earings out for about 2-3 weeks after getting them peirced, and clean your ears a couple of times a day with salty water until your ears are healed

Silver works better for me bc I am allergic to gold. I think many people actually have gold allergies....weird huh. I have lots of problems with my earring holes, always have. If I keep them clean and turn them often they feel better. If you're so worried about it, why get them pierced?

Gold studs are much better. The most important think is to keep the piecings clean once they are done, clean daily with medical alcohol.
