I seem to recall that you can't fit an 8 speed on a 7 speed frame or even a 7 speed on a 6 speed frame, but I vaguely recall that 8/9 are interchangable? Is this accurate, or was I dreaming it up?

Under 7sp and it's 130mm spacing

Over 8sp and it's 135mm spacing for MTB's and 130mm still for road bikes though they use the same freehub body.

7sp cassette was VERY short lived and useless really.

Since moving to 8sp and refining the chain width you can go all the way up to the modern 10sp cassette on the same freehub body...

Enjoy!

Yeah, you probably can. You have to measure the width at the dropouts and build your 8 speed wheel that wide. It may be the right size or may need a spacer or 2. If you use extra spacers make sure the wheel is centered on the axle.

This is gonna sound dumb, but you will need an 8 speed shifter.

I don't think you can make a 6 or 7 speed frame accept your 8 speed wheel, but you can measure the dropouts and see if there is enough room.
