It is the only safe way to eat lobsters and crabs. There is a part of them that breaks down and is very harmful to humans, and the longer they are dead the more of it there is. The only way to prevent this is to cook them alive. If you don't you risk the chance of becoming sick, developing a allergy to the lobster or crab, or even worse dying. Don't worry they don't "scream"

I actually plunge my knife in the lobsters head seconds before boiling it. I've also poured boiling hot water on it while it was still alive. Its an easy way to get the raw meat to seperate from the shell without boiling the whole thing

I have heard that you should kill the lobster by putting a knife or something into the brain before you cook it. That seems a lot more humane to me.

First of all, lobsters aren't 'animals'. They're giant underwater BUGS.
Secondly, a lobster's flesh begins to deteriorate soon after it is killed, so to get the best flavor and texture they must be boiled alive. To make it more humane, you can freeze the lobster for about 10 minutes beforehand to 'numb' it.
Either way, it's a bug.

Because lobsters are out to get us!
We should kill them first before they take over....and that kind of torture sends a pretty clear message to other lobsters, dont you agree??

lobster is a sea food dear. so its a perishable food item. all sea foods are perishable e.g. lobster, crab etc so it gets spoiled very soon. if they kill it first and then cook it then there are more chances of that to get spoiled. so they don't kill any sea food item before cooking. i agree with u that its not fair but people do it for their own health as well as taste. its their choice...

So that it remains fresh... Sea food tends to stale extremely fast.
Another (maybe not so harsh) method would be to freeze/cool the lobster in a fridge (which makes it fall asleep but not dead) and then put it in hot water.

The humane way, as someone else pointed out, IS to put it in the freezer first, but it will not just fall asleep. It will die of hypothermia; it loses consciousness before dying.
