Generally, if a studio does not look clean, it probably isn't.

Be sure the artist can show you representation of their work. They should have an extensive portfolio.

Be sure everything like needles, pigments is single service. That there is a sterilizer available if they use metal non-disposable tubes. Proper barrier protection of cords, bottles containing liquids, lamps.....anything the artist would be touching during the tattoo.

They should be using fresh gloves and change them when appropriate.
