My son has a '97 Honda Civic and loves it. He swears he gets about 30 mpg.

I'd suggest a VW Golf or Jetta with diesel. They get something like 50 to 55 mpg. I currently have a '01 Ford Focus ZX3 (stick shift), and I get about 24 in the city (but I'm a lead foot!), and 32 on the open road (staying between 75 and 85 mph.), so that's pretty good, too. Toyota's are also good. Honda of one of the best, , but they also make a lot of power, and it's hard not to put your foot down and use that power (more power equals more gas.) Keep away from American cars (the Focus was designed in Germany), because this country has yet to learn how to make a good 4 cylinder car. They put all their R&D money into large cars with large engines, so the local designs are mediocre at best..

Remember to buy small - the less mass you have to get moving, the less gas it will use. And buy a stick shift - autos commonly use 17% of your power, therefore an additional 17% of fuel.

A great 1st car would be a Honda Civic. It is very reliable, great on gas and has a high resale value. It is also one of the safer cars to drive.
Another good choice would be a Toyota Corolla for the same reasons.

The Honda civic is good on gas and on repairs (new or used)

If gas is a major concern look at the VW diesel (rabbit or Golf), it averages something crazy like 55 miles a gallon.

Japanese vehicles because they are cheap and very easy to purchase and maintain and cheap to get parts if you get a ding or engine problems. Please buy fuel injected (EFI) and get something under 1.7L (1700 cc) This configuration give best miles per liter of gas.
