I don't think you'll get any answers to this from a compulsive liar. I'm curious what happened to you that you want to know this. I used to be close friends with a compulsive liar. My ex cheated on me with her, she was always two timing her boyfriends. She could never tell the truth. And when something didn't go her way, or if I stood up for myself. She got defensive. She'd call me the liar. Which is commonly known as projection in psychology, and liars project as a defense mechanism. Yes, I think it's stemmed from shame. I think the reason they lie at all is because they don't know the truth any more. The girl I knew, got so bad she doesn't even know what's real and what's not. I haven't talked to her in over a year. But I recently found out she thinks we're best friends, and that I've joined some cult that forbids phones, which is why she can't call me, and that I have not internet right now, so I'm hard to get ahold of. She also thinks she and her boyfriend are still together. She lied so much, and alot of it to convince herself things were better than they are. She forgot all the times she spread rumors about me, talked behind my back to my friends, and started dramatic fights and forced people to get involved and choose sides. Now she's stalking me from afar.
I don't know if this answeres your questions. But I am wondering what could have happened to make you ask this.
Best of Luck

You are asking the entire world for an answer. Everyone is compelled to lie at some time and usually many times during their lifetime. Lying is not all negative and even when negative can cause a positive result.
Old paradox: I am telling you the truth, but I am a constant liar.

As the mother of a compulsive liar, I can tell you its something they do without thinking sometimes, usually because they don't want to get fussed at. Yeah, I know thats illogical, because we're really going to fuss when we catch them in the lie, but I don't think they take the time to stop and realize that before they open their mouth. It also stems from some mental disorders, and genetic codes, believe it or not.

I personally know a compulsive liar and is just unbelievable how much she lies. Yes she has hurt people close to me like my family. I really dont know why it is they lie soo much, is it the lack in confidence? or just an easy way to escape from problems?

My family and others around me used to say I was a compulsive liar and I just couldn't help telling lies. That really wasn't why, it was that I wanted to tell everybody what they wanted to hear. I was dealing with a bad situation. Both my parents were bipolar and so was I. (Nobody was on medication) Once I left home and got on medication for bipolar disease everything seemed to work itself out.
