Hi im using a HP with Windows XP for some reason the Disk cleanup option says "scanning: compress old files" for hours i have left it on for over 24 hours and nothing appears. It looks as if it is working but there is no end to its scanning . i have a lot of memory used up but it i dont think that it should take that long for my drive to find files to compress. any suggestions?

First I would run Scandisk and then defrag the drive. Then try to do disk cleanup. If that doesn't work. goto Control Panel---Internet Options and delete browse history. There is alot of stuff there that will also slow your disk cleanup down. By the way I also have a HP Media Center Editon XP...Hope this works for you.

That happens more often as you do not clean up occasionally. Also it is commonly know for that to happen especially if you are very low on harddrive space.
