What is good rear end gear for a 1985 GMC 1/2 ton truck?it is 2wd. It has a 2.73 in it now.It is a ten bolt. I have a 305ci pushing 400+ horsepower. I was wonder what is the best all around towing,good highway and take off speed? I was think a 3.42 or 3.73.

If you have a 700r4 overdrive trans, then 3.73 gears should still be reasonable on the highway. If you have a non overdrive manual trans, or a TH350 or TH400 auto, then switching to a lower gear ratio (higher numerically) will result in dismal gas mileage cruising down the highway, because the engine will be turning much higher revs.

If you have 400+ HP.. I would recommend a 14 bolt 9.5 inch ring gear Chevy differential. I is also helpful to have a limited slip carrier because the clutches keep everything pre tensioned. 3.73 would be a good ratio if you are using fairly big tires..

Your sixty 4 rearend is A 12 BOLT. tHE CAPRICE IS a 10 BOLT. The sixty 4 has solid gears, the Caprice' is solid. Plus the sixty 4 is a 6 bolt,precise and the Caprice is 5 bolt. What does this tell ya?
