I like the countryside in places like Ubon, Mukdahan, Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Udon-Thani and similar locales. The reason is life is still simple there. Its slower and reminds me of when I grew up in the USA in the 50s and 60s. The people are real...not the false fronts put on by many in places like Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and tourist locations. I made my first trip here at age 18, 36 years ago. I came back for the first time in 2001 and moved here in 2005. The absolute best thing though, is I have no trouble finding a good Thai restaurant!

I like Nan province. It's so rural and yet has all the conveniences of a big city ( I'm talking about Nan City). Best of all: Nan people. Though some merchants aren't really born or raised in Nan, they are kind, friendly and honest (at least those that I came to know during my visit). I like the clean streets and telephone booths with sitting stools, inexpensive meals, serene scenery and its National park, beautiful temples and traditional Nan costumes for both men and women. I have to say that Nan will be my place of retirement in the near future.

Hi Thailady - - I am a wanderer at heart.. I live in Tak Province and that is ok, less touristy than most - - but I think for me, a special place is Pranburi and anywhere south along the coast to Chumphon.. Baan Sapaan etc.. The unpopulated beaches, the lovely coves.. it is quite serene..

I have liked the Isaan better primarily because my friends are there and I get to enjoy the many flavours there each time I visit Thailand. It is so much more enjoyable for me. Still many more provinces there to visit.

What is yours?
