You often hear people say that "God loves everybody." However, it is a modern heresy that you don't find in the Bible.
Christ (God) demonstrated His love by dying on the cross to take the penalty for our sin. He loves those who are His children. Those who have repented are His children. Those who have not are children of wrath (there is Scripture to back this up if you want it).
Since God is a merciful God, He will receive glory from those in Heaven from those who He has saved.
Since God is a just God, He will receive glory from those in Hell for those who are receiving punishment. (This latter concept is not pleasing to an American modern mindset - especially since most want to be accountable to none and/or want to be his or her own god - but Biblical nonetheless).
If God is good and just, He must punish sin and law breakers. As well, only mercy and grace is effective in the light of justice and punishment. If there is no justice and punishment, there is no need for mercy and grace.

I seem to recall a bible verse that explains Hell as being cast from God's sight, or somethign along those lines. This would imply to me that He doesn't love them, because He doesn't notice them.

God is pure and holy - he can have nothing to do with sin or corruption.
Our choices - sin - separate us from him. He loves us so much that he sent his son to be in our place, to die. But Christ overcame death through the power if life that only God has, but we have accept the truth of God through faith to have salvation.
"God so loved the world that he sent his only Son that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" - (John 3:16).
God loves us so much - but we are sentenced to separation from him due to our choices... but his Son's sacrifice gives us a way to eternal life..
