Dogs do go through a lot of water normally. My pack keeps me busy refilling the water bowls. A lot depends on size of dog obviously. A 9 month old pup is still growing. There should be a somewhat equal "output" of all this water too. And they will drink more when out in hot weather of course.

It is hard to say when a dog is over drinking and there might be a medical problem, such as diabetes. No one here could say for sure. If concerned please call his vet and ask. I assume you have an established vet for your pup and he has been seen several times by 9 months. If so then he should not mind your calling.

Since he is so young, you can rule out several disorders that afflict older dogs - but you can't rule out things like diabetes. Make sure you measure his water and call the vet to let them know how much water the pup is drinking (per hour/per day, etc.) - the vet will be able to tell you if you should bring the pup in for testing or not.

Although puppies do like to drink water a lot, it sounds as if your puppy may be drinking excessively. I'd recommend having your veterinarian check for diabetes and also test thyroid function and kidney function. Any one of these are possibilities of excessive thirst.
