The total flight time depends on which airlines he is flying. The schedule non-stop flight from Amsterdam (AMS) to Washinton Dulles airport (IAD) is between 8 hours and 30 minutes to 8 hours and 50 minutes.
United Airlines flight UA 947 departs Amsterdam (AMS) at 12:30 and arrives in Washington Dulles airport (IAD) at 15:00 for a total schedule flight time of 8 hours and 30 minutes. I chose Washington Dulles as the closest international airport to Virginia with flights from Amsterdam.

Of course, the actual flight time will depend on the winds, speed of the aircraft and the actual route the aircraft flies. Depends on whether or not he has to change planes. Without a layover, it takes about 6 hours to fly from the DC area to London. Amsterdam is about an hour flight from London, I believe. So without layovers, you are probably looking at 7 hours approx.
If he could give you his airline and flight number(s), you could check the airline's website to not only see how long the flight takes, but also check to see if it is on time.

I think it's about 6 hours. Of course he could always have a layover in NY or whatever city he is flying through for customs. Sorry you couldn't go with him. I think you would have enjoyed it.
