Private Ryan's life was "paid for" by the sacrifice of his fellow men. They were asking him to be a good man in order to earn what they had sacrificed their lives for.

At the very end of the movie, Mr. Ryan pleads with his wife,"Tell me I've led a good life. Tell me I'm a good man."

Meaning now that a bunch of men have given their lives so that you could have yours, don't waste it and become a drug addict or something.

Live your life, enjoy it, understand the sacrifice that was made on your behalf. Doesn't the captain simply tell Ryan to "Live, Ryan, live."

And at the end when Ryan is an old man he's not sure if he met their expectations or not....and he will never know.
