I have a 00' ford F-150 when I start it up, it cranks about 4 times stays on for about 5 seconds at very low rpms then shuts off. Tail pipe also smells a bit like gas. What could be the problem or problems?

Try using a timing gun to reset the timing belt. We had to do that with my mazda miata when we put on a turbo. It takes two people and alot of work but it worked.

It is not burning the gas, so you will smell the fumes. That is normal. But a lot of variables, from bad fuel filter to bad gas pump.

Put a little gas in it, whether carb or injectors. If it starts right up and then stays smooth, then it will die for lack of gas, this has narrowed it down to the fuel pump. This is what I call the first thing to do to eliminate the fuel pump.

Possibility of timing chain, timing off, and more.

What you do is get the Haynes Repair Manual for your Year and model of vehicle at Auto Zone, or another automotive repair shop. The manual will show you what and how to do the repairs. It has a flow problem section in it. Like if car does this, then check on this, this, and that. About $20 but worth it.

i own a repair shop, and whats happening to it ,is its flooding at idle, you need to change the plugs in it first then it will start up ad idle, its probably going to need a new 0-2 sensor also this probably contributed to it flooding, also check the gas filter ,low fuel supply will also make it run like its flooding but it really wont be,if you get it started after you install the plugs in it ,take it by any auto zone and have them scan the computer on it,this will help you a lot in finding exactly whats wrong with it,good luck,i hope this help,s.

Well, could be a lot of stuff, but, I'm really skeptical of the injectors in these things -

A lot of times you can cure this instantly with a can of "Sea Foam" injector cleaner in the gas tank. Not STP or some cheap stuff - Sea Foam brand name. I've used it to cure exactly this on two or three trucks.
