God's mercy pardons our sin when we accept His Son ,Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Jesus pays the full price for our sins with His death.

The same pardon from God can be applied to people who have committed crimes against society. However, there are some crimes that society expects retribution for.

With God, Jesus does the retribution but, in both cases, we and our children, can still suffer the consequences of our poor judgment and bad decisions if we do not turn to God. http://www.surfinthespirit.com/parenting/sins.html

When Jesus was on the cross, there were criminals on crosses beside him. He forgave one of the criminals, saying "verily today, you will be with me in paradise." Even though Jesus forgave the criminals his sins, there was still a price to pay for the wrongs the criminal did to society. The criminal died on the cross.
