I was a nurse in a hospital for a long time. You call the Human Resources number if there is no Volunteer coordinator listed in the phone book.
Volunteers mainly help answer phones, deliver flowers, gifts, magazines, newspapers, etc to patients. They spend a great deal of their day directing and taking patients and visitors to various places in the hospital. (for tests, patient rooms, etc).
Hours can be flexible, but it just depends on how short they are, or how much time you can give. Many volunteers put 4-8 hours at a time in.

Check with the hospital to see if they have a volunteering program. I know of someone who volunteered at Sharp Hospital...they ask for a year commitment, I think.
