Taking the Lord's name in vain means to invoke the names of God with empty, non-spiritual, epithets. You call upon these names for a reverent purpose, usually through prayers of Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, and Supplication (ACTS).

I agree that God is a title, not a name, and therefore saying "goddamn it" isn't taking the Lord's name in vain. Personally, I don't say it for a couple reasons. Respect for the title of God and in the Bible (in so many words) says to watch what comes from the mouth. I don't remember the exact verse though.

For one, you are in err if you think God is going to send you to hell for taking his name in vain or anything else for that matter. Once we accept Jesus as our personal lord and savior, His blood covers our sins forever more. Once we are saved God doesn't expect us to be perfect, because if we were to be perfect, there would be no need for Jesus. That doesn't give us a license to sin, though. As we accept Jesus, we give our lives over to him, allowing him to transform us. We are a new creation. We may get frustrated at times and say those things, but once they come out of our mouth, we are instantly convicted and feel the need to repent. Just remember God knows our hearts and he is a just and forgiving god. There are a lot of false propehets out there that twist scripture to scare us into doing what THEY want and not want God wants. Allow the holy spirit to guide you when you read His word and you'll never go wrong. Hope this helps.

What I don't get is why saying,"Oh, God!" when you rear-end your mom's car is a sin. His name isn't "God" so by saying it you aren't really using his name in vain, right? And Jesus wasn't God either, so by saying "Jesus Christ!" when you stub your toe, you aren't saying His name in vain, either... If anything, that would be one of the moments using His name would NOT be in vain. Who wouldn't call out to their object of spiritual faith in a moment of pain, upset, or degradation??? I got yelled at by my HUSBAND'S father when I nearly knocked over a $2000 TV in his house once, because I reflexively yelled "Jesus!" as I scrambled to pick it up... I was so annoyed I didn't say ANYthing for 20 minutes for fear of saying something worse (he told me there IS nothing worse). I am not Christian, and I never will be, but I do respect the beliefs of others to a point. But COME ON...

It has always bothered me when I see people say it means you shouldn't say "God damn" or something like that. It means you shouldn't say you are a Christian and not follow through with it. You are taking his name in vain. I'm not even a Christian and I can tell you this.

Showing disrespect for God is the basic gist of it. One of the things that self proclaimed atheists do is to take outdated material and throw it in the face of theists. This is also done by members of organized religions that are trying to use reason (as if they know what reason is) to break down others beliefs. Of course it never works but makes for some colorful dialog.
Enjoy your dialog.

Something like that. Anybody who uses the name of God to get their own way, to steal, to cheat, to abuse children, that is really dishonoring God's name. Saying "God Dammit" when you're mad may not be praiseworthy, but you're not trying to make people think you represent God when you do that.

I just think the Lord's name(s) is holy and he is holy and he just doesn't want us throwing it around or adding curse words to it for no reason. He is the highest authority there is and he just wants his respect for his name. A person wouldn't walk up to the President and adding curse words to his name right in front of him. God is everywhere and hears everything and doesn't want his name thrown around in a disrespectful way I guess.

I would say that taking the Lord's name is vain would be using it in an unworthy manner.
