The GLS is the 1.8L, and if I recall the manual mentions either premium or regular works, but premium is better. By premium, does it mean PREMIUM premium i.e. 93 octane, or unleaded plus, which is 89 octane, as opposed to the 87 octane regular. I have actually heard that 91 octane is available in some areas and that this it he preferred, but that was just word-of-mouth and 91 is not available in my area.

I assume that this car is turbocharged. If it is then I would recommend that you use 91 or higher octane. This better for the turbo. The link below gives specs and recommendations for your car.

Run it with regular 87 octane. The 1.8 liter engine does not require any higher octane of fuel. A higher octane does not mean better gasoline, the gas is the same, you are just getting more additives and "cleaners" for the engine. Believe me, the additives are not really worth the extra cost of the fuel.

If you have the 2003 VW Jetta 1.8L GLS, then you have a turbocharged engine.

Volkswagen recommends using 91 octane (or higher) gasoline with their turbocharged engines. It helps them run cooler and thus extends the engine life.

I've found that with mine, anything higher than 87 octane actually decreases the miles per gallon i get.
Go figure.

Just go with regular 87 octane. That should be sufficient.

i own a repair shop, and most of those will actually run good and perform well on 87 octane ,if it doesn't you can use 89 in it,but i know a few of them running on 87 and they do fine on it,and the owners save on fuel cost also, good luck i hope this help,s.

Your 10-year-old battery is just about worn out and when it gets cold the voltage drops the way it would if a light came on drawing power and that starts the alarm. Get your battery checked and replace it if it's weak.
