This is a great question. The big thing is not to overdo on your first day back with exercising. Start with a bike or elliptical trainer or treadmill for a brisk warmup for about 6 to 10 minutes to get your pulse up. Do some machines for your arms and legs and your abs. 10 reps of any exercise at a weight lower than you think you should do. Start light and build up gradually. Finish with more aerobic time, for 10 to 15 minutes. Plan to build the aerobic time and to move up to doing two sets of 10 reps on the machines/weights over a number of weeks of build up.

YES! If you havent exercised in a while, heres a crucial suggestion:
5-10 warm up on a stationary bike, treadmill, walk outside, etc.. Then do 15-20 minutes worth of stretching! You must get your body acclimated and loose to ease back into a fitness routine. If not, you will be hurting so much, you wont want to go back, and you may injure yourself.
Then id finish with 10-20 mins of cardio. Maybee some push ups/sit ups in the beginning. In a few weeks time, you can push yourself harder stuff, but baby steps in the beginning.
Like the old swimming addage: Dont just dive in, go feet first, first time.
Remeber to make it fun! Take a friend, or your ipod and have a good time--it should be a stress reliever, not a stress!

An ipod or mp3 player will make your workout 10xs better. Start off the day with a healthy breakfast. Get your gym bag ready tonight so you don't have to tomorrow. Go in that gym with confidence. Your body will thank you in the end. Good luck.

Just start off light. Start off with some light cardio as a warm up. Do 15 mins or so on a treadmill or bike.
A fun way to start off at a gym is to check out whether the gym hold group fitness classes, like aerobics or yoga or things like that. Group fitness classes are always fun because if you are unsure, there is always someone there who is less competant than you. Group fitness classes are always fun, and it really motivates you to keep going.

Don't overdo it! Don't lift weights that you once lifted expecting that you still have the muscle tone for it, because if it has been a long time, you won't have as much muscle.
Don't get aggravated with yourself; you are taking steps in the right direction again, keep stepping that way!
Finally, just be consistent; slow and steady wins the race and Rome wasn't built in a day. Keep up the good work!

Take it a bit easier then what you are used to. if you didnt excercise/ go to the gym for a long time chances are you will feel sore afterwards. Do some jogging on the treadmill and go easy on the weights.
