the Canon S3-IS:

...or splurge and get the Canon Rebel XTi 400D:

I like the former simply because, 1. movie mode, 2. 12x optical zoom, and 3. about half the price of the XTi. The XTi however, is the SLR everyone is craving, but I am reluctant to spend that much on a piece of equipment I know very little about. Advice?

Since you are reluctant to spend the money on something that you know little about, I think you are here to get someone to agree with you. You make a good argument for getting the S3-IS.

This is a camera that MANY would covet, so do not feel bad about "starting out" with the S3-IS. My daughter had a few years experience with her 35 mm (film) Canon Rebel before she went digital and, even with the SLR experience and a couple of lenses already in her possession, she bought a Canon S2-IS and she is very happy with the camera and her pictures.

If you have money to burn, though, you can go ahead and buy the 400D. It has enough pre-programed automatic features that you really don't need to know much to get good results. If you want a 12x zoom, just buy the Sigma or Tamron 18-200 lens (11X) or the Canon 28-200 lens (7X).

the XTi will be better for high performance and good low light pics, but the S3 may be a better choice because with the XTi, you can only shoot from the viewfinder and only view taken pics on the LCD. either of the Canons are good choices. It just depends on what you plan on using your camera for.

over the summer i bought the s3 Is and i absolutely love it. it is by far the best digital camera i have ever used and the zoom is absolutely amazing. the only cons is sometimes i wish the sport mode gave the option of flash but other than that i am happy with it
