I just had a bunch of dental work done without it because it simply doesn't work for me . . . everyone I know thinks I'm weird. Is there anyone out there who has a similar peculiarity?

I have little to no pain with each procedure so it's not as though I'm screaming in the chair. I've had up to five injections with one DDS and no effect.

There are some conditions under almost any anaesthetic drug, such as novocaine, will make little or no effect. People who consumes a lot of alcohol or who has consumed a lot of alcohol the night before; infected zone; people who take drugs; or even people who's organism needs more than the usual dose to suffer its effects; nervous people or even a missplaced punction to deposit the anaesthetic.
Maybe you are in this last situation and you simply need more than the usual dose; or there's even people on which the medication will take longer to start making effect.
Such is this last deffinition that when in this people the anaesthetic used is free of a component that slows the speed of circulation in the zone, then the anaesthetic will have been reabsorbed by the time that, in this people, it would have started its effect. (Anaesthetics without this last component usually last about 15 minutes or maybe 30)
Some anaesthetics have a stronger and faster effect, but also have some disadvantages; but in the end, they wouldn't be manufactured if such disadvantages were to worry about.
Maybe they should try a different anaesthetic on you, or, instead, you could just have a pain killer half an hour before the dentist, which should help a bit on feeling less pain.

Sometimes when there is an infection in the gums, the novocaine will not work because infection actually changes the chemical makeup of your gums and basically "de-activates" the novocaine. And sometime some people just don't take well to it. A few different injections sites are usually tried and will at least get the tooth somewhat numb. If not, sometimes a different anesthetic is used. :)

There are different meds that novocaine. It's good that you don't need it. It must have something to do with how the nerves grew in your gums etc. for you. Some people can get all kinds of shots-and be hurting and feeling the whole thing. So you are blessed.
Take care.

I know it takes a lot for some people to respond to it. Sometimes 2-3 times as much. It can also be due to extra nerve endings that a small percentage of the population has.

My husband does not always have good luck with novocaine. I am surprised they didn't offer to use something else on you though.
