Like most of Albert Bierstadt's work this painting was based on another painting he did. Bierstadt took oil paints and stretched, primed paper with him to visit areas that no Western artist had seen before in 1859, and he painted on location with tube oils in a simple, gestural style. When he returned east he used these paper paintings to paint his finished works on canvas, some of which were eightteen feet wide. Lander's Peak (which was unnamed before Bierstadt gave it a name) is in Wyoming. This particular picture was completed in 1863 and, in 1865, James McHenry bought it for $25,000. The artist later bought the picture back and gave it to his brother Edward.
