When will we need passports to drive into Canada?

The passport regulations for travel by land take effect sometime in 2008 ... anywhere from January to June ... it isn't set yet.

However, it would be in your best interests to go ahead and apply for a passport if you are eligible for one. Then you have it and don't have to worry.

Some time next year. There isn't a fixed date yet. It is currently between January 2008 and June 2008. Having said that, I would plan for the earlier dates. The passport to fly regulation was 3 weeks later than the Jan 1, 07 date.

Note how this link says "as early as"

"Drive into Canada"-you won't need a passport.

To "enter or re-enter the USA" the earliest has been Jan 2008, some say June 2008 and now...the news has been saying into 2009.

Passports do make your life easier at the border and travelling. If you had your wallet stolen it is hard to get a replacement drivers license sent to you in Canada so you can go home. A passport can be sent to you much easier.
