Whether they were armed or unarmed it sounds like a situation doomed to end in failure. I appreciate you taking the initiative and trying to handle two problems at the same time. The problem is if you send unarmed people to that region to fight the militias that are already established there, chances are those people will die. Secondly, you would have to be more specific about the type of inmates youd send. I mean there are different levels of crimes and different levels of criminals. Most of all, any fighting force needs some degree of discipline and respect for authority. Inmates for the most part have a problem in both areas which landed them into the prison system.

I don't even know what point you're trying to make. If you're saying that convicts are scum, well, yes, many if not most of them are - but rehabilitation is something that's been missing from our prisons for some time now. Brownback's making that an issue in his presidential run, in fact.
If you're saying that convicts are a way to solve the military personnel shortage, that's nuts. Soldiers are disciplined and trained and, most importantly, follow orders - convicts wouldn't do so well. As for sending them unarmed, what good would that do for our troops on the ground in Iraq?

You OBVIOUSLY have the word CRIMINAL and SOLDIER confused. Let me clarify it for you. 1. A soldier enlists to fight for the freedoms of people living in other countries. He fight to destroy oppression and dictators. A criminal becomes a criminal because he is to lazy, too stupid or too uneducated to earn his money honestly. 2. A soldier takes pride is his work. A criminal takes pride in his gang membership, his tattoo's or the number of innocent people he screwed out of money. 3. A soldier is someone who is well trained in the use and non-use of a variety of weapons. He shows discretion is using them. A criminal uses weapons to intimidate others, commit his crime or shoot anyone who gets in his way. 4. Soldiers can be trusted to perform in a certain way. Criminals do whatever feels good, whatever gets them money or whatever helps them to complete a crime. I think you've seen the movie "The Dirty Dozen" too many times. Looks good in the movies, but could never work in real life. In short, you could never trust a criminal to do a soldiers job. Those in prison are usually hardened criminals and have absolutely no respect for authority, the law or the rules. That's what got them to prison in the first place. Those are EXACTLY the kind of people that are denied military services or get discharged quickly once they are in.

During the Vietnam conflict, suspects convicted of various crimes were often given a choice by the judge - either join the military or go to jail. Many were inducted into the military through this practice, including several in my own platoon the the Marines back then.

I WAS going to say no because they're either too violent and/or can't shoot worth a damn, but then you specified unarmed.
It WOULD be an interesting loop-hole to the death penalty though wouldn't it? Send them as moving targets so when an enemy gunman pops up to shoot them, he gives away his position to friendly forces who can then "neutralize" him?

Same question - same answer!
Not with my son's squad. As a Captain, he needs to be able to depend on his men not worry what crime they are up to.
Draftees were not always the best soldiers, if you do not want to be in military then you are probably not doing your best. In Iraq, that could cost someone their life

Better still how about, all the illegals that get caught, be given
the chance to earn citizenship, sort of a trial by fire.

I think it would be a good idea, you make it home then you are free, I would give them guns or whatever they need, most of them already know how to use them.
