medications crushed into a powder and sniffed through the nose will be absorbed by the mucus membranes of the nasal cavity and into the bloodstream where yes, route to the brain is directly accessed. any substance that is not immediately absorbed is washed down into the esophagus where it ends up in the stomach and is digested

ingesting substances in this manor habitually over time can cause permanent damage to the structures inside your nose and skull

A sniffed drug is absorbed by the mucous membranes in the nose and trhoat and then the lungs. This is why so many drugs can be lethal. They are absorbed to fast. This is a major problem with the drug Oxycotin, it is time released and by sniffing it you absorb a 12 hour pill in minutes, easy overdose.

Every medication is formulated to be taken a specific way, and a lot of times if you mess with that formula you will lose effectiveness of the drug (or you can cause it to be dangerous, i.e. - some medications have a special coating so that it dissolves not in the stomach, but in the intestines (so it won't hurt your stomach lining). This is not good. You need to explain that to your friend. Encourage them to go talk to their doctor.

It depends on the type of medication he is inhaling. However, you are right to worry about your friend, because sniffing the crushed pill indicates that he/she needs serious psychological help. I hope a psychologist is here in Yahoo Answers and reads your question.

It goes either into the lungs, or goes through the membrane into the blood. You are right to be worried about your friend because this is a form of drug abuse. Please tell your friend's parent, a school counselor, a principal, or some other adult who can help right away.
