i've been to ny for a week too and i saw the whole nyc in only 5 days!! The best way is subway cause it's fast and easy. You should go to the following places
~ statue of liberty
~ definetly time square (if u love shopping)
~ take the red tour bus and you will see many things
~ empire state building
~ niagra falls ny (about 7 hours by car from nyc)
~chinatown
~ largest toys r us in the world!! (in times square)

There are a lot of places to visit in NY. The main places to visit are the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Time Square, and maybe Ground Zero. You can go shopping at 5th Avenue and Chinatown (mainly Canal Street) also. If you wake up really early, you can maybe go to Rockerfeller Center and be seen on TV on the Today show (which is around 7AM). I prefer to take both. You can switch with the bus and subway if one system does not go to the place you want to go.

You can get pretty much anywhere in New York by subway, which is quick and safe. It can be confusing at first (they don't call the lines by colors like most cities), but you'll figure it out quickly. The subway is safe to use well into the evening.

the subway is excellent and gets you everywhere you need to go, don't be intimadated how large it is, it really is easy to use. the busses are great too and go all over town and although the subway maybe faster, my first time in NYC I preferred the busses because I got to see mroe of the city rather than be underground
