It's weird. I don't feel sleepy per se, but my eyes want to close and won't stay focused. Obviously, I need more sleep or caffeine but when I'm on the road and this happens to me, I can't go back in time and make sure I slept the night before or had coffee before I left. What are some good tips to help wake myself up when this happens? I've tried biting my tongue, digging my nails into my skin and sitting up straight but it's like the pain doesn't seem to matter. Thoughts?

Ok, probably should have mentioned that I've never actually fallen asleep and I would definitely pull over before that happened. I'm not having trouble staying in my lane or anything. If that happened, rest assured, I'd pick up the cell phone (after pulling over) and have someone come get me.

keep very cold, ice water around, freeze a few bottles and keep them with you when the need to sleep comes, either poor the water on your groin, or stick a few of these frozen bottles under your shirt, or in your pants,or you could try a thermos of hot coffee , maybe tacks in your shoes, or on the seatm i have not driven for thirty years, i fall asleep on bicycles

I have a very hard time sitting in one position for along time. This makes me uncomfortable in church and meeting and driving. I tend to close my eyes for a second and wake up later. I frequently "fidgit" in my chair by moving around alot. Since I can't do this while driving I find I might need a short nap. This is true when driving a long distance. I won't stop at a rest area, to dangerous, but I will take a quick nap in a highly populated place like a gas station or McDonalds. A fifteen minute nap can save my life and that of others.

at first i thought you could solve your problem by opening your car window to get some fresh air. but, if you are having this same problem @ church maybe you are narcolepsy. if not maybe you have some other sleeping disorder which prevents you from sleeping @ night so then you're tired during the day. you might not even know that you aren't getting a good night's sleep. contact your doctor immediately, before you drive yourself to church next sunday!!! Good luck!

I think you should consult a doctor or any professional help on this because this might be serious. In the meantime, you can try having a cold damp towel nearby that you can wipe on your face or put on your forehead (for a few seconds) while driving. That's what my mom used to do for my dad during long road trips.

When I am falling asleep while driving, I slap myself in the face to wake me up. This only works for a little while, so I end up slapping myself repeatedly, harder and harder.
Well, it's better than falling asleep and running off the road and dying in a firey wreck.

A WARNING...
(this actually happened to me a couple of times traveling from South Carolina to Pennsylvania)...
You get real tired...but you know you can't go to sleep because you're driving the car.
You don't want to pull over to take a nap or short rest because you need to get some miles under your belt (as it is it's a 10-12 hour trip just stopping for gas and a pee).
You turn up the radio...open the window and let the cold air rush over you...but, your eyes get heavy and want to close...
then it happens...you convince yourself it's ok to "just close my eyes for a couple of seconds"...only a couple of seconds.
I did this...IMMEDIATELY FELL ASLEEP... and drove off the highway onto (fortunately) a wide shoulder where there were no trees or poles...
I GOT LUCKY!!...and it scared the crap out of me to think of how close I had come to ending it all.
BE CAREFUL...PULL OVER WHEN YOU FEEL TIRED...
IT MIGHT JUST SAVE YOUR LIFE (AND THAT OF YOUR PASSENGERS).

pull over in a rest stop before you kill someone, by the way the police in some states are ticketing for driving while distracted or sleep deprived for this every reason.

when I have exams and haven't had enough sleep I would put in a very loud music OR get someone else to drive me home.
I only fall asleep when it is completely quite.
anyhow, try to get enough sleep.

as casual as your question seems, this is actually a serious problem. you could very well kill someone or yourself falling asleep while driving. you should make very sure before you drive that you are fully prepared to stay awake and accept the responsibility of driving. if you are constantly falling asleep, you should speak to a doctor and make sure you are physically ok.
