An artist is one who creates. The passion to create is inherent in each person and this creativity is manifested in a variety of forms. All who create are artists. Everyone is creating something. No matter what profession you choose, something is being created, even in sales, the need to purchase is created. If it is not a material item, it is a need that is being created. Painters, musicians, theater and all art disciplines display their creativity in artistic forms that make this innate desire apparent, openly engaging and attracting others in this process we call art. Here is a great artist's quote about art that sums things up nicely. "Art is from the heart. It is more than just paint on canvas. Art is freely expressing the obvious in a fresh, unique way through which all may benefit from and enjoy", JoAnn DePolo. Hope this helps.

The interpretation of an artist has been very badly abused. One would think that it would be someone with an outstanding skill. When referring to a painter. Like Michal Angelo or Leonardo Davince. But then people like Vangoe come along with no skill and no grip on reality, cuts off his ear and becomes famous. So they called his junk art. And that opened up the field for every one in the world the be called an Artist. All you need is paint and a canvas.

Talent.
You need a desire that overcomes everything else. Think of doing a painting (or a song) and nothing can stop you. You are so compelled you'll stay up late into the wee hours of the night until you are completely exhausted. When you go to sleep you can't help but think what you need to do to continue on with the project the next day.
An artist is his own worst critic. A true artist is Never Finished with his work (it can always be improved, in his own mind).

NO TALENT , NO IMAGINATION OR talent and imagination
Artist is truly a perception of the mind.
In the eye of the beholder.
Are you an artist when you get discovered? PEOPLE call you artist and you are one?
Some of us artists are in the backlight waiting for that day when we can say " I'm discovered!". You are talented and are quite good but, Until the PUBLIC sees you as artist you are just in the background painting , drawing and creating. Hopeing for that day when someone promotes your work
SAD BUT TRUE

Hmmm. Interesting question. First of all, imagination. The would-be artist would be compelled to see the world around him/her in abstracts and derive something from that. Another thing would be the desire to create. Even before the artwork materializes, the desire to do and see that special product of imagination is there. Talent, of course, is essential. People with natural talent have the ability to design anything with ease. Formal training is good to have as well, however, it is not always necessary.

An artist needs to have certain skills and knowledge. Some skills are the motions of their hands. Another skill is the way of thinking where it will go to fit better. You need knowledge to find out what happens if you accidentally overlap. You also need courage to keep on going with things

I think what makes an artist, is someone with a story to tell and the ability to express that story to the world in his/her own way.

We are all artists. Just the the process of thinking creates something and we do this all our lives subconciously. Just think of a memory or a feeling, or a smell and you instantly create a vision. "Artists" are just those who conciously materialise the unconcious.

for me it was the inspiration of my uncle who would send me elaborate pieces of art from prison when i was about 5. As i got older art would allow me to express myself as an escape from many life crisis in my family such as divorce, the deaths of my father his cousin both of my grandparents my uncle and my stepdads father.when i was a teenager music, drugs, girls, and loneliness caused me to go threw a weird faze of art that was dark and gothic. Then in my late 20s christianity became my main influence for doing art.Now im in my 30s and what inspires me to do art ; vampires, tattoos, graffitti artist, japanese culture, nature, christianity, people in general, politics,an open mind, and most of all having the desire to do art and then actually doing it.Id also like to say that art is just a matter of ones oppinion and if you have the desire to do art then go for it.Experiencing life is what makes an artist
