Do anyone know which is cheaper as far as fence goes privacy or chain link? I have had people tell me that privacy is cheaper but I always thought chain link would be cheaper.

What is the purpose of the proposed fence. Are you attempting to keep children or animals in the yard? or are you looking for some privacy?
There are different grades of chain link fence (9,11,12,etc) and the thinner the fence material the less expensive it is. Most people cannot install a chain link and have to hire a fence company to do it.
The same can be said for wood privacy fences. Pine is cheaper than cedar, pressure treated is an option and some people learn how to install wood fencing themselves.
Determine the purpose for the fence and then go shopping around.

I suppose what area of the country you live in determines the price of either. If you are buying a fence then I'd be thinking more of which type I'd "prefer" rather than worrying about the price. A chain link is used more for pets, animals, the country. A privacy fence is more for the more private and ritzy areas so that people can get a sun tan in their yard or take a dip in their pool without being watched by a neighbor. Although we used to hang clothes on a clothesline when I was growing up, we just grew high bushes between the yards. That way you can make cuttings each year and start more bushes. Bushes might be the cheapest way to go. The only problem with bushes was that they needed to be trimmed several times each summer.

Chain link is much cheaper than privacy fencing.

If you compare a four foot chain link fence to a six foot privacy fence, the chain will win. If you want privacy, you know what you have to do.

Chain link is cheaper, but some neighborhoods don't allow them. If your area does consider price, look, and future replacement or fix.
