Watch us cross the street - we don't wait for the sign to say "walk"; the traffic is already stopped, why wait for those few seconds. Seriously, I lived in California for a year. Whenever I spoke, people would ask what part of New York I was from, or where on the other coast or what part the east I was from. One day, I crossed a street and when I got to the other side a man asked me what part of New York I was from - I hadn't opened my mouth. I asked him how he knew. He said "nobody but a New Yorker would have the guts to cross the street the way you did". I crossed against the light in the middle of the block - the closest car was two blocks away and I saw no reason to wait.

If a person says: "I'm from The Big Apple!" you know that they are NOT from New York!
If you ask them where they are from, a person will not say:
"I'm from New York City."
They will say:
"I'm from Queens."
"I'm from Brooklyn."
"I'm from Staten Island."
"I'm from the Bronx." or
"I'm from Manhattan."
