I've misplaced my son's precription and he has an appointment Wednesday for crowns. Is there something over the counter I can give him instead?

It's to calm his nerves. The last time we had an appointment he slept thru the entire procedure even thought he threw up the medicine. The side effect is he was a complete pain in the butt all day because he didn't feel good.
He's having crowns to cover his fillings. Two at a time every week!

Ring the dentist's office and arrange for a new 'script. Usually he can phone/fax it thru to your nearest pharmacist.
Otherwise, give him some Tylenol to help reduce his pain levels. There are also some combination medicines available OTC that might have a calmative effect - ask your pharmacist for advice.
For best effects, give him the medicines on an empty stomach about an hour before the appointment.

You can try a placebo? I'm sure your son has real anxiety but maybe he can overcome it on his own if he THINKS he is getting something to help. You know...mind over matter. I do respect his problem though, not trying to minimize his needs...I am needlephobic and so I have some doctor and dentist anxiety of my own.

Just give him an appropriate dose of Tylenol right before he goes into the dentist and tell him it is his bravery pills. See what happens. Make sure you tell the dentist that he has this in his system because they need to know everything about present health...other meds in his system, recent cold or flu, allergies, herbals and vitamins, any recent vaccines, any recent infections or antibiotics.

Don't give him ibuprofen or aspirin, if there is any bleeding involved with his dental work, it will be worse, because these are blood thinners. Just stick to acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Best to ya!

7 year old getting crowns? are you sure your not thinking of fillings?

but it is best to not give him anything before going to the dentist because they do have pain killers, unless he is like me and nothing the dentist gives ever works... Any pain killed besides ibuprofen (or any other anti inflammatory) would work fine

Why does he need anything? Getting crowns aren't painful.
Was it something to calm him down? Call for another prescription if you can't find the other one.
