this is a very interesting question. I say ust hide behind a book and let the yawn out. I get sleepy in class too, but my lecture classes are so large that yawning wouldn't even be noticeable.

I can yawn and keep my mouth closed, but I seem to yawn more frequently. I think that it is because a yawn is supposed to send oxygen to the brain to wake you up, but by keeping your mouth closed when you yawn, this is prevented.
But it will help you to avoid thinking you are being rude I guess.

Just go ahead and yawn silently. I do not consider it rude. It is one of the reflexes which is very normal and natural. No one should take it personally. I am an attorney, if someone yawns when I am speaking, I don't mind it.

Keep your lips closed and you can yawn in the back of your mouth without it showing too much. Cover your mouth with your hand for full effect.

Cover with your mouth with your notebook. Take deep breaths to get more oxygen; that should prevent yawns.

You can yawn without opening your mouth. You may have to clench your jaw but it works.
