Please help. I picked up my 8 year old male golden retriever from surgery. The pain medicine has not worn off, but he seem to be in pain. Not wanting to sit down. He is just standing sround....waging his tail :). Is it ok to give him one pain pill. The doctor said wait 12 hours and give with food. I am in the middle of a blizzard conditions and getting out is not an option. I had to pick him up a day early from recovery because of the snow storm. Anyone out there any help. He looks great. Actually, aside from the pain. He looks very thirsty and hungry and cute.

No No No No. He's already got pain meds on board. Thats why he's acting strange. My guess is they gave him morphine or something of the likes to keep him in a pleasant state the rest of the night. He's whining and crying I'm guessing? Not due to pain, but more so being annoyed with the fact he can't get comfortable. He's just not in the right state of mind. Although his body is fully functioning, his minds a little out there, Kind of like if you've ever taken vicodin or something of the sorts and feel just a little off. You really do need to wait on the pain meds. You're just going to be giving him more than he needs. He'll get comfortable eventually. Thats normal.

My 8 year old lab went under to have his teeth cleaned. We brought him home that afternoon, and he whined allllllll night, especially for my mother when he found out how much of a sucker she was for drama! He just felt out of it and wanted everyone to know. I can imagine medication is very disconcerting if you can't understand what its going to do to you and why you feel so strange.

If your dog can wag his tail, and you can touch him without him freaking out, he's probably okay. Don't give him another med. Don't worry, it's normal to be a worried pet parent! :)

BTW, most dogs get pretty defensive when they're in a lot of pain, even if they know you. You can tell if they're hurting because they might seem a bit hostile, or at least reluctant, to let you touch them. If you give him the med in the morning, and he seems to be in serious pain throughout the day, then call your vet.

I probably would wait until it is time for the medicine because if you are in a snow storm and something happens you may not be able to get him to the vet if he gets sick from it. I If he is wagging his tell and eating I would say he may not be in pain right now it might just be hard for him to sit. Hope this helps. Good luck with everything and I hope the pathology comes back with wonderful results and your dog heals wonderfully from surgery.

I'm not sure that you should give him anything if the vet said 12 hours. It doesn't sound like he's in pain from your description. He's probably really glad to be home and doesn't want to leave your side. When you go to bed bring him up to your room & let him sleep on a blanket beside your bed, then give him a pill in the morning.

If you are convinced he's in pain then just give him half a pill.
