Children generally fare better than adults, and patients who are somewhat responsive do better than those who arrive at the hospital in a deep coma.
A third factor, however, rises above the rest.
"I have to say it would be location, location, location" of the wound, said Dr. Michael Nance, director of the pediatric trauma program at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

It depends on the extent of damage. Not all bullets destroy the brain. Sometimes by the time the bullet reaches the head a lot of its power has been expended, it may not hit the brain tissue, and there have been some very weird wounds where a person doesn't even know he has a bullet in his skull. or where the bullet follows the inside of the brain cavity and comes out on the other side. Weird things DO happen.

Actually, I do know someone who got shot in the head and survived. It just so happened that it hit one of his front teeth, which shattered but was tough enough to take most of the force from the bullet. He unintentionally swallowed the pieces of the tooth and the bullet, and had to have it replaced with an implanted false tooth, but was otherwise fine. Not even a scar.

A lot depends on conditions...such as bullet caliber, soft point, hollow point, area of the head the person was shot, thickness of the skull.
Hollow point bullets probably do the most damage due to fragmenting, splitting into several pieces or mushrooming when it hits something solid.

Well, it would depend on where the enterance/exit wounds are, how much blood loss and when medical attention was given.
It is definitely possible. I know people who have survived.
