There are numerous cameras available which are reasonably priced. You want one with an optical zoom of at least 3X or times... the digital zoom is really not an important feature although they all state if they have that feature. Optical zoom is using the lense to zoom. So your original picture will be zoomed in. Digital enhances the existing picture to zoom.

HP, Canon, Olympus, Fuji, Nikon, Kodak, and a host of others make very nice units for $100 to $300 in the "point and shoot" models. These should be fine for your purposes. Good luck.

Video can be done through many of these models. But they will be fairly small in size of viewing picture and the quality will not be as good as a camcorder model. Great for spot situations, but not for archival purposes.

Pretty much all digital cameras zoom. I can only think of one digital camera with a prime lens (a lens that does not zoom). Digital zoom isn't a factor, but optical zoom is. For optical zoom, three or more times (3 X) is good. However, there are 'superzoom' cameras that have built-in lenses capable of 10X or more, however, if you purchase such a camera, make sure it has optical image stabilization of some sort, because with that much zoom, your photos may turn out too blurry. The ho-hum camera of today is Canon's SD 600, if that's what you want.
