I have a D40 camera, and the SB-600 speedlight. Is it possible to set them up as wireless flash without the SB-800? And if it's possible, how do I set them up? Thank you in advance.

The SB-600 can be used as a remote unit, but not the master or triggering unit. WIth my D-200 and SB-800, the built-in flash (pop up camera flash) can be used as the commander, firing the SB-800 or SB-600. It is not clear to me from the on-line D40 manual if the built-in flash can do this.

If you look in your manuals, you will find some directions about the set-up requirements. With the SB-800, there was an additional booklet showing a couple dozen configurations for remote flash operation and from this booklet, it was very clear and easy to understand how to use the SB-800 as a remote or master unit. Maybe the SB-600 came with a similar book.

I'd say, set the SB-600 in the wireless remote mode as described on page 52-53 also page 60 of your SB-600 manual. Fire your on-camera flash and see if the SB-600 fires as a remote.

I'm sorry that I don't know all the details of the D40, but you can just experiment with this information and see if it works.
