would 2 subwoofers and each getting 500 watts be as loud as one woofer being powered by 1000 watts?

If all of the speakers were the same size. For example, 2 10"s, each with 500W versus 1 10" with 1000W, the two speakers would typically be louder. More surface area means more air being moved around (and usually twice the box size, right?)

If they were different speaker brands that whole principle goes out the window.

So I'll emphasize the 'TYPICALLY'.

too many variables to tell. how big are the woofers, what kind of box are they in that kind of thing. its very possible though.
