I have two pit bulls. All they want to do, outside of the back fence, is start fights or chase cats. No matter how many times i tell them "NO," theyre still very aggressive towards other animals. I know its in their geans to be that way, but is there any way i can get them to just be cool around other animals? They dont fully comprehend that Im their leader. How can I get them to behave all the time?

Pitbulls are animal aggressive, thats why they chase cats and other animals. Thats something that engrained in their genes, some have a stronger aggression than others. You may want to talk with a trained professional obedience trainer.
With the leader issue, you need to show the dogs who's boss or alpha. Eat before your dogs do. Dont walk around your dogs, make them move. You determine when they get your attention, not them. I think once you establish yourself as alpha, they will start listening.
Dogs work on pack mentality. If you're considered at a lower rank than they are, you're not going to be listened to.

Pitbulls are wonderful family dogs, but they are not good for families with cats and other small animals. They are outlawed in some states because of the bad rap they've gotten because of bad owners and those who raise them only to fight and be human-aggressive. But according to the temperment testing, 95% of well bred pits pass.

Regardless of training you will always need to keep a close eye on your pup when other animals are near. Also, NEVER leave them together unattended.
For the morons who say pit bulls are dangerous to people... They are the only breed to be bred to be specifically not human aggressive. These dogs were handled in the pits and if they bit either handler or the ref it was an immediate loss, then an immediate cull. Breeders culled people aggressive dogs.
Dog aggression IS NOT the same as animal aggression.

Good luck with your pups. Please do some research on the breed. It will really help you care properly for your dogs, and keep other animals safe from them. Try reading some Richard Stratton books.

Edited to add... Dominance is not a usual problem with pit bulls. They are very eager to please.

You will have to have been coaching this canine for months. Bully breeds need an skilled handler/trainer. Get you and this half of grown canine into obedience classes so anybody can coach you the best way to teach your canine. Make certain the trainer has expertise with bully's. These puppies should not just physically robust, very powerful, they're simply as head robust, stubborn. They want someone that can educate them without being aggressive. You have got to persuade this dog persons are alpha. He already thinks he is, he's going to just attempt to persuade you. Alphas: eat first, manage the meals. You eat first the feed your dog. While you put the food down put your canine in a take a seat keep for 10 to 15 seconds earlier than you provide the free command. The canine handiest eats when the alpha says so. Are first, consistently. You go up and down stairs first, through doorways first. Are continually on prime. In no way let your dog on a larger level than you. Another factor, taking part in tug with a knowledge aggressive dog will not be a just right inspiration, it helps convey out their aggression.

First, you need to contact a professional trainer that understands dog aggression and Pit Bulls.

Telling your dogs "No" isn't going to cut it.

You should walk your dogs everyday for at least 30 minutes. More is even better. This will drain excess energy.

They should never be allowed to chase anything ever. If they are chasing other animals they shouldn't be allowed out without a leash. When you take them out on thier leash as soon as they even look like they are going to chase something you snap the leash and say no. The higher thier anxiety is the higher the correction you give them. You have to snap the leash as soon as you see they are thinking about chasing something. If you can't read your dogs body language I recommend getting some books on dog body language. Knowing how to read your dogs body language is very important. My Pit Bull has a very high prey instinct and I have to work with him constantly. He has learned not to chase the cat that lives with us. Its not easy but you have to do it or you will find yourself in a bad situation.

I am not sure how old your dogs are but it seems to me that they have had little to no socialization at all. Socialization should start when they are puppies and continue through adult hood. Training should also been done all through puppy hood to adult hood. A dogs personality can change as he goes from teenager to adult and then to senior. You have to constantly train your dog.

Owning Pit Bulls comes with great responsibility. You must remain in control at all times. Your are not in control of your dogs and it sounds like there is an accident waiting to happen. If you don't know how to get your dogs to behave then maybe the Pit Bull isn't the breed for you.

some dogs do have a certain disposition, but every dog needs training, not just pit bulls. So, I would suggest training as others have. Possibly see if you can find a trainer that specializes in Pit Bulls. Call the local Pit Bull Rescue Group and they may give you some more information about how to find the correct trainer as well as your vet. And get your dog to the vet for a check up. Good luck. Don't give up or get discourged. Training lasts a life time, but it's worth it. Give your dogs a loving home.

I think you should get a trainer for help. It is very important to establish YOUR dominance over them as this breed can have very dominant personalities. Also, you don't want them ever accidentally getting out of your yard and attacking and/or killing another animal. Are they dog aggressive on walks or is it just when they are in the yard. Many dogs exhibit "barrier aggression", they will only be aggressive if there is a barrier between them and the cat/dog, etc., but if the fence was removed, they would be fine. This may be easier to solve than if they are just dog/cat aggressive period. Consult a trainer ASAP, as the longer you wait the harder it will be to correct the problem.

You have to claim the position of pack leader. this is not just some slogan it is a psychological technique to gain respect and control of your animals. IF YOU ARE NOT THE LEADER ,THEY ARE. Watching "The Dog Whisperer" on the national geographic channel will give you an idea of what that is about ,but you will need some hands on direction from a qualified behaviorist ,as the bad behavior is already established.(It's easier to prevent bad behavior than it is to reverse or eliminate it) And as Abby Normal said" You must keep a close eye on them around animals you may trust them some but never 100%.

Make sure both are neutered/spayed and get a trainer and/or behaviorist. Do not get a powerful breed like pit bulls, German shepherds, Rottweilers, etc without knowing the breed backwards and forwards and knowing how much training they need.

okay first of all its not in their genes. and second of all you need to start seperating them when they act like that. make a certain area a time out spot and make them stay there till they behave! thats the best way to get through to them that your the boss and they arnt. it will end their batle for dominance but the thing about chaseing cats.... that will always be there. my pit likes cats but cats dont like him while my friends it will go chase down one for a snack. its a dog thing people will never understand.

Take them to a trainer for behavior modification training and for to learn socialization skills as well for you to learn how to establish yourself as Alpha leader IMMEDIATELY!! Or be prepared to lose your dogs and pay a fat fine if they kill someone else's dog or cat because it's only a matter of time before something like that happens
They are great dogs because I have one. But they require a strong leader. If you care about your dogs you will take my advice.
