I find myself staring too long sometimes and don't know what to expect as a result.

Eye contact is polite during a conversation - provided you blink occassionally, nod your head when appropriate and participate in the conversation. In other words, don't be a zombie or leer at the other person. If you're not talking to the person, like they're just another person in the room, then no, don't stare.

Staring is disrespect showing others a rude approach or a challenge, so they say. People tend to feel you are trying to be better then they are. Or people think your being a wise ***. Some staring and a glance in the air shows interest in the conversation your having, then stare back. Direct eye contact is important. You must blink in between. I personally stare into peoples eyes so I can read the person, scanning back and forth as I stare. My ex girlfriend was deaf, she stares all the time to read lips, scan and read a person. I stare and people dont mind, body language helps with the stare. A smile, gesture, body movement besides.

If you find yourself staring it's better not to look at all.
Looking people in the eye is considered rude in some cultures and in some contexts. Some people have a feel for when it is appropraite, others don't. If you don't, best to err on the side of caution and don't look people in the eye.

as long as its not creepy. for example, if you are just there and the other person is just there and you arent really talking or anything then no. but if you are talking (particularly to a person of the other sex) then yes. i love staring into peoples eyes during a conversation because you can tell a lot more that way

In some cultures,it's considered rude or even challenging to stare at someone you don't know. The only time to look someone in the eye is when you are speaking to that person.
