The elliptical can be as effective as the treadmill, without the shock to your joints that running can produce.

The trick is to make sure that you are working out as intensely on the elliptical as you might on a treadmill. If you jump on, have the resistance setting at 1 or 2 and then just coast along, it will take a long time to burn any meaningful calories. Of course, if you walk leisurely on a treadmill, the same will happen. It's less about the machine you choose than about you and how hard you work.

I would recommend using your pulse to determine how hard you are working. Set the resistance on the elliptical at a level that gets you at between 70% and 80% of your maximum heart rate. Use this calculator to determine how many beats per minute that would be:

or

It's very easy to take your heart rate during exercise. Just count how many beats you have in 15 seconds and multiply it by four.

Take this approach and you'll always ensure that you are working with the right intensity to meet your fat burning and weight-loss goals, regardless of what machine you use.

If you're interested in some more advanced techniques, consider adding in some interval training, which many people find extremely effective at fat burning. I've included a link below.

Good luck!

Smoking is an appitite suppressient so it makes sense that you gained when you quite. But ellipticals are one of the best and most effective weight loss machines out there. Really! Nothing better. Ellipticals focus on the cardiovascular system and also on your upper and lower body at the same time. They also have no long term problems like running, running causes EXTREME back problems. Ellipticals are really good for the joints because they aren't affacted or stressed too much. An elliptical would be more of a fat-burning machine. It was the best machine i ever used.

An elliptical machine is mainly thought of as a cardio exercise meaning that it is going to burn fat. You will build some muscle but not as much as you would if you were lifting weights, which should also be done to increase your metabolism. 30 minutes of cardio, a weight routine of some sort and a healthy diet should be enough to help out with your weight loss. Great job getting rid of the cigarettes and keep with it!

OK from personal experience, the elliptical did NOT do much for me. Running is the best way to stay in shape and tone your body. In fact even walking for 30-60 min a day is more effective than the elliptical. It is due to the pounding of running and the fact that you propel your body through the air so that both feet are off the ground simultaneously. This kind of movement takes lots of energy.

Hope this helps!
