Yes XP can boot from and external. Maybe not the fastest thing to do, but it will work.

Not sure on Vista, but I think so.

If you are thinking of having both available, do a drive tray instead. It will work for sure, and be much faster.

If you are thinking about doing support, you can get a full windows boot on a cd, including utilities.

Note: PC must support external boot in BIOS.

No i don't think of its elementary, i'm particular people have discovered approaches to load Xp from an exterior hardcontinual. the reason of it is I actually have at the moment extra yet another inner HD to my computer and it connects rapidly right into a sata port on the motherboard, I then put in the application that got here with it to apply it to my pc for regardless of i wanted it for, storage, boot, etc. besides exterior HD's connect through usb no longer sata. you're waiting to placed xp on it then bypass into your BIOS on startup to load xp off it. having access to bois is oftentimes F2 on startup.

yes. you would have to go into your boot menu and change it. You would also have to install windows again on your external harddrive. i do not reccomend because i have kids around the house and they LOVE to UNPLUG cables so when someone unplugs that cable... bye to whatever you did

It all depends on your BIOS, look in it and see what you choices are for boot, if it allows external devices then you are ok,, if it does not, i have to say i am sorry,, good luck

Why would you want to do this? Everything is faster when run from the PC hard drive.
