We've been together for almost 2 years, but we've known each other for almost 5. He is getting an apartment, and he says because I don't pay the bill, I don't get a key. But if I was in his position I would give him a key. I don't know... I feel kind of hurt, because it's not like we're in a casual relationship, we're in it for the long hall (supposedly)

This isn't his first apartment, and I never asked for a key to the other one because it was early in the relationship. However, we have a child together and the only reason we haven't set a date is because I didn't want to, I just don't understand why he claims that he is so serious about our relationship, and he wants to get married blah blah blah, what does a key matter? Why? Because I know if the tables were turned he would want a key, and I would give it to him.

That was HIGHLY rude comment. I suspect this is not the first time that he has said something like this. Am I right???? He most likely wants his privacy and doesnt want to feel weighed crowded by you. And this is OK. But, if this was truly a long term relationship, I think after two YEARS of dating, he should just naturally give you a key. Just my two cents....

Most Definetely! Your Roommate didn't have to be "part" of this situation and she thinks it stinks... So, get that key back! Something may have happened to change her mind about him, and if she doesnt feel safe, then its a dangerous situation for her, and thats not a good thing. Whether your boyfriend is an Eagle Scout, or Church Elder, its not his decision, because he doesnt 'live' with you...Your room mate does, and she "pays" her share of the rent so, she can say who has a key or not. I would either get the key back, or, have the locks changed, or, move to another apartment and dont have room mates and "then" give your key to your boyfriend. The third room mate has a say in this too, and so, no man should have a key to an apartment where there are nothing but girls in it, and come and go at his whim.... It aint just right if you know what I mean. Just explain it to him, that he has to come to your workplace to pick you up or see you if he gets in town early or go see a movie or do something... And ask for it back. If he doesnt give it back to you..then, you should "know" that there is something wrong and change the locks immediately! I wish you well... Jesse

He is def hiding something.. or maybe it is just the whole macho thing. I would just get something for him like something he likes, and say you want to go by and drop it off (when he isn't home) but you can't because you don't have a key. If you do that a few times he would probably give you a key because he would want to know what you got him. Its worth a try i guess.

wow, well, we had keys to each others place's after the first month or so.

Been together over 5 years now. We share every thing. I honestly couldn't imagine being serious with some one any other way.

Why do you need a key? He's got the key, you'll be there with him, he can let you in. Don't make something out of nothing over a small piece of shaped metal. It is not a test of trust, simply a matter of need. You don't need a key.

Don't ask again. I understand you are hurt, but try not to show it and do not offer to pay any bills either. Long haul or not if he wanted you to have a key he would have given it to you.

Give him time to play the big shot with his first place with his guy friends .He has a few childish issues ,What is mine is mine and what is yours is mine .He may ask you to move in with him to help pay the rent, unless you are wearing an engagement ring and have set the date , don't do it .
He might be afraid of you walking in on something .
Good Luck .

Read between the lines, if he wanted you to have a key he would give you one. Possibly he has plans for his new bachelor pad, watch yourself on this one )

No it is not OK.
You do not have a "living arrangement ' commitment with him.
Your doing everything backwards.
You get the key when you get an apartment 'together".

There is a reason why you can't have a key, and it has nothing to do with money! C'mon!
