It breaks the hair strands down to straighten them. The chemicals are harsh, though people will tell you it isn't. So be carefel. Make sure that your friend conditions a lot and uses heat protectors while drying or styling, because relaxers do have the power to do some real damage to your hair.

Relaxing breaks down the sulfur-hydrogen bonds of the hair and then the neutralizer reforms them in the new shape, which is straight in the case of traditional relaxing. Structurally, it is similar to a permanent wave, where the bonds of the hair are broken and then resealed around a rod. Often a protein solution is applied to the dry hair first to equalize porosity so that the relaxer takes more evenly.

There are different kinds of relaxers that work at different rates and for different purposes. Sometimes a combination of techniques is used. Below is a link to a cosmetology textbook that tells all about the different types and techniques. Hope this helps!

Okay, I would never recommend a relaxer and here is why. Your hair is naturally a level 4.5-5.5 on the PH scale. A relaxer is on the alkaline side of 13. So basically, you are destroying your hair. The ending result will be straight, frizzy damaged hair. It is harsh and you will have to use conditioning treatments every week, and your hair will not even be close to healthy by the time you need a relaxer retouch. Trust me I am a cosmetologist, I refuse relaxers, especially on Caucasian women, whose hair will damage more because of the thinner qualities. Invest in some Paul Mitchell super skinny shampoo, conditioner and styling products, and a great chi flatiron. You'll save yourself 300$ and your hair's health.

A permanent relaxer works in the opposite way of a permanent curl. A curl puts suffer protein into you hair that make it curl, relaxers take them out. I've had relaxed hair sense I was like seven. It straightens everything out, and it IS permanent. You have to wait for new hair to grow in before you will have curly hair again. Oh, and try to be really gentle with you scalp the day leading up to getting the relaxer, or it will burn the **** out of you. Don't scratch! Good Luck!

a relaxer permanently straightens hair. every 2 to 3 months your friend will have to get her roots "touched up" because they will grow in wavy. if she ever wants her wavy hair back, she will have to cut off the relaxed hair.

here's a great website:

if she doesn't take care of her hair, it can break off. i would advise her not to get a relaxer, but i can't tell anyone else what to do.

If her hair is wavy she should flat iron it straight I would only recommend relaxing hair that is kinky or very curly.go to a salon if she wants to relax her hair she should only have it done by a professional as to minimize breakage.

well if you're white, it's not called a relaxer, it's just straightening,if you're black it means the same thing it just relaxes your hair.
