What is causing my spider veins?

I have recently discovered "spider veins" across my midsection where my diaphram would be. I have not suffered any trauma prior to noticing them. The grouping is farely large, should I be concerned?

My mother has spider veins on her legs. She always hollers at me not to sit on them at the dinner table or on the couch, because she claims that sitting on them for an excess period of time is how she got them. There are many other possibilities. I hope this website helps you.
